How are Atlas C55 turnouts? There have been mixed reviews, but most seem to be negative. Is improving them worth the effort, or should I just build my own turnouts? If so, what’s a good source for C55 rail since Micro Engineering is hard to get ahold of?

Atlas C55 work for me, they do have issues for some people, and me sometime, overall i pleased with their performance.  If you can't Micro Engineering rail, you can buy atlas flex track and pull the rails.

Since we're talking switches, What would be a good under table switch that would allow a surface top decoration?

I have been using Atlas code 55 track since 2005 when I started my layout.  I have not had any significant problems with them though I have had to replace two due to my errors, not the fault of Atlas.  I have in excess of 500 feet of track laid up hill and down dale.  I have it laid in curves as small as 16" and as wide as 72".  My layout was chronicled in N-Scale Magazine several years ago in a series of 17 parts.  I had a large number of photos included in the print articles.  You may contact me at: walthuston@earthlink.net
