What do you use for modeling roads?  Any pics of your ideas would be appreciated.  One suggestion was using 2mm foam (from Facebook).  How do you make your roads?

I've always used WS Smoothit system since it was made available.  Easy to tint, easy to lay down and work with and if you dont make it toooo smooth, it has built in potholes :D  lol

To make my roads I use a relatively smooth material such as Masonite. I paint it either concrete or asphalt color.  It is is concerete, I score expansion joints.  Then I paint the lines.

I have used plain dark gray construction paper for asphalt and light gray for concrete.

I normally use thin plastic sheets. My cheap source is plastic signs, (For Sale, etc. ) found at Home Depot, and Lowes.  I cut the road to shape and using the back side, prime it and paint the color of your choice. If it represents concrete I scribe the expansion joints. Tar filled cracks are done with a fine tip Sharpie.

Most recently on a T-TRAK scene, I used finest grit charcoal gray sandpaper, trimmed and glued in place on a steep grade descending to a crossing. Used a fine tip gel pen and a stencil style edge ruler to lightly apply lines.  (I couldn’t find a pic) And, the picture attached is another technique where I blackened dry Hydrocal with tempura paint powder, then heavy brush applied it over wood and foam surfaces, literally paving the roads. Same line technique in foreground. Mid ground is a curb-divided bridge. Back-ground includes hand crafted New England stone walls (cut a straw in half, fill it with fine ballast/sand/tiny stones and then flood the straw with Elmer’s clear glue. Dry, peel straw away, and cement wall in place).

I've used various thicknesses of  styrene sheet for roads, with an additional layer for sidewalks.  These need to be painted with your favorite pavement color.
