Most recently on a T-TRAK scene, I used finest grit charcoal gray sandpaper, trimmed and glued in place on a steep grade descending to a crossing. Used a fine tip gel pen and a stencil style edge ruler to lightly apply lines. (I couldn’t find a pic) And, the picture attached is another technique where I blackened dry Hydrocal with tempura paint powder, then heavy brush applied it over wood and foam surfaces, literally paving the roads. Same line technique in foreground. Mid ground is a curb-divided bridge. Back-ground includes hand crafted New England stone walls (cut a straw in half, fill it with fine ballast/sand/tiny stones and then flood the straw with Elmer’s clear glue. Dry, peel straw away, and cement wall in place).
